The RRB NTPC typing test, officially called the Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST), is conducted for specific clerical positions under the Railway Recruitment Board Non-Technical Popular Categories examination. Based on the official RRB notification and rules published on various regional RRB websites including rrbcdg.gov.in and rrbguwahati.gov.in, the test is a qualifying stage that must be cleared for appointment to clerk and typist posts.
Unlike SSC typing tests that start directly, the RRB NTPC CBTST has a structured three-part format. First, you get a 1-minute warm-up period where you can type freely to get comfortable with the keyboard. This is followed by a 30-second break. Then the actual evaluated 10-minute typing test begins. Only the 10-minute main test is scored. This structure is designed to give candidates fair opportunity to adjust to the exam center keyboard before evaluation starts.
For English typing, the minimum requirement is 30 Words Per Minute. In a 10-minute test, this means you must correctly type at least 300 words. For Hindi typing, the requirement is 25 WPM, which means at least 250 words in 10 minutes. These are minimum thresholds. Given the error calculation formula, you should target at least 350 words in English or 280 words in Hindi to maintain a comfortable buffer.
The RRB uses a unique error calculation formula that differs significantly from SSC. Understanding this formula is critical for your preparation strategy.
First, evaluators classify all errors as full mistakes (1 point each) or half mistakes (0.5 points each) using criteria similar to SSC. Then, RRB gives a 5 percent exemption on total words typed. This means if you typed 350 words, 5 percent of 350 equals 17.5, and these errors are forgiven. The formula works as follows: Total Mistakes equals the count of full mistakes plus half the count of half mistakes. Final Mistake Count equals Total Mistakes minus 5 percent of Total Words Typed. Net Typing Speed equals (Total Words Typed minus Final Mistake Count multiplied by 10) divided by 10 minutes.
This 5 percent exemption is a significant advantage that SSC does not provide. It means you can afford slightly more errors in the RRB test compared to SSC. However, do not rely on this exemption as a safety net. Instead, aim for clean, accurate typing and let the exemption serve as an unexpected bonus.
The CBTST is mandatory only for specific clerical posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, and Senior Clerk cum Typist. If you have applied for other NTPC posts like Station Master, Traffic Assistant, Goods Guard, or Commercial Apprentice, you do not need to take the typing test. Check your specific post category in the RRB notification to confirm whether CBTST applies to you.
One major difference from SSC is that RRB allows you to retype the passage from the beginning if you finish before the 10 minutes are up. This is a significant advantage because it lets you increase your total word count. If you type fast enough to complete the passage in 7 minutes, you can start again and add another 90 to 100 words to your total, which improves your net WPM even after error deductions. Practice typing the full passage quickly so you can take advantage of this retyping opportunity on exam day.
